The rapid advancement of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming educational systems worldwide, redefining how teaching and learning are conceptualized, delivered, and assessed. While technological innovations offer unprecedented opportunities for personalized learning, enhanced engagement, data-driven decision-making, and expanded access to knowledge, they also expose a significant generational divide among educators and learners. This divide is characterized by differing levels of technological proficiency, pedagogical beliefs, digital literacy competencies, and attitudes toward educational innovation. As schools, universities, and training institutions increasingly transition from traditional teacher-centred approaches to technology-assisted and AI-enhanced learning environments, understanding and addressing this generation gap has become a critical educational priority.

This paper critically examines the nature, causes, and implications of the generation gap in the context of twenty-first-century educational transformation. Drawing upon contemporary literature on educational technology, digital literacy, generational theory, innovation adoption, and AI in education, the paper explores how educators from different generations navigate the challenges and opportunities associated with emerging technologies. Particular attention is given to the contrasting experiences of digital natives and digital immigrants, the evolving role of teachers in AI-supported learning environments, and the impact of technological change on curriculum design, assessment practices, learner engagement, and educational equity. The paper further investigates how institutional readiness, professional development, infrastructure availability, leadership support, and policy frameworks influence the successful integration of AI-driven educational tools.

The analysis argues that the generation gap should not be viewed merely as a technological challenge but as a multidimensional educational issue encompassing cultural, pedagogical, ethical, and socio-economic dimensions. Without deliberate interventions, disparities in digital competence and technological confidence may exacerbate existing educational inequalities and hinder meaningful innovation. However, when supported through collaborative learning cultures, targeted professional development, intergenerational mentoring, and inclusive policy initiatives, the generational divide can become a catalyst for educational renewal and transformation. The paper proposes a framework for bridging generational differences through lifelong learning, digital capacity building, and human-centred AI integration that preserves the relational and ethical foundations of education while embracing technological advancement.

The study concludes that the future of education depends not on replacing traditional pedagogical wisdom with artificial intelligence, but on fostering productive partnerships between human expertise and technological innovation. Bridging the generation gap is therefore essential for creating resilient, inclusive, and future-ready education systems capable of preparing learners for the complexities of an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.

The increasing complexity of global supply chains, coupled with mounting pressure on manufacturing firms to reduce cost, shorten lead times, and improve product quality, has pushed artificial intelligence (AI) to the forefront of procurement transformation. This study empirically examines the relationship between AI adoption in procurement and the operational performance of manufacturing firms. Building on an extensive review of recent literature (2020 to date), the study conceptualises AI adoption in procurement along three dimensions, namely AI-based supplier selection and evaluation, AI-driven demand forecasting and inventory optimisation, and AI-enabled spend analysis and contract management, and tests their effects on operational performance measured through cost, quality, delivery, and flexibility. The study is anchored on Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the Resource-Based View, and the Technology-Organisation-Environment (TOE) framework, and tests four hypotheses derived from an integrated conceptual framework in which implementation barriers, namely cost, digital skills, and data quality, are modelled as a moderating variable. Using a descriptive cross-sectional survey design, primary data were obtained from 345 procurement and operations managers within manufacturing firms registered with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Results show that all three AI adoption dimensions have a statistically significant, positive effect on all four dimensions of operational performance, with demand forecasting and inventory optimisation exerting the strongest effect. Implementation barriers were found to significantly moderate the AI-performance relationship for cost and delivery outcomes, but not for quality and flexibility outcomes. The study concludes that AI adoption in procurement yields measurable operational performance gains for Nigerian manufacturing firms, and provides original, developing-economy, firm-level evidence on the AI-procurement-performance relationship and its boundary conditions.

While these innovations offer unprecedented opportunities for personalised learning, knowledge creation, and global connectivity, they also raise critical concerns regarding the erosion of human values, ethical decision-making, teacher–student relationships, cultural identity, and holistic human development. Against this backdrop, there is growing recognition that future education systems must balance technological innovation with human-centred learning that nurtures intellectual, moral, emotional, spiritual, and social development. This paper reimagines the ancient Gurukul education system as a relevant framework for addressing contemporary educational challenges in the age of AI. Drawing upon classical Indian educational philosophy and contemporary literature on AI, human-centred education, and the Fifth Industrial Revolution, the paper critically examines the core principles of the Gurukul tradition, including experiential learning, character formation, personalised mentorship, ethical leadership, lifelong learning, environmental stewardship, and the integration of knowledge with values. Through a conceptual analysis, the study argues that these enduring educational principles remain highly relevant for designing future-ready education systems capable of preparing learners not only for technological competence but also for responsible citizenship, creativity, resilience, and sustainable development. Rather than viewing ancient educational traditions and emerging technologies as opposing paradigms, the paper proposes a complementary framework in which AI enhances learning while educators continue to cultivate wisdom, compassion, critical thinking, and ethical judgement. The study contributes to contemporary debates on educational transformation by demonstrating how the Gurukul education system can inform the development of human-centred, culturally responsive, and ethically grounded education policies and practices in the Fifth Industrial Revolution. It concludes that the future of education lies not in choosing between tradition and technology but in integrating both to create inclusive, innovative, and values-based learning ecosystems that promote human flourishing in an increasingly intelligent world.

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, social media, open educational resources, and global connectivity has fundamentally transformed how knowledge is created, accessed, shared, and applied. In the twenty-first century, learning is no longer confined to classrooms, schools, universities, or formal curricula. Individuals can acquire knowledge and skills through families, communities, workplaces, online platforms, indigenous knowledge systems, social networks, and AI-powered learning environments. This unprecedented democratization of knowledge raises a critical question for contemporary education: If knowledge is everywhere, why do we still need schools and universities? This paper critically examines the evolving role of formal educational institutions in an age characterized by ubiquitous learning, lifelong learning, and artificial intelligence. Drawing upon contemporary educational theory, constructivist perspectives, human capital theory, and emerging scholarship on digital learning ecosystems, the paper argues that the traditional role of schools as primary transmitters of knowledge is becoming increasingly obsolete. However, rather than rendering schools and universities irrelevant, these transformations require a fundamental reimagining of their purpose and function.

The paper contends that the future value of educational institutions lies not in controlling access to information but in fostering critical thinking, creativity, ethical reasoning, collaboration, digital literacy, social-emotional development, citizenship, and the capacity for lifelong learning. While knowledge can be acquired anywhere and at any time, schools and universities continue to play a vital role in providing structured learning experiences, quality assurance, mentorship, socialization, cultural transmission, and equitable opportunities for human development. The study further explores the tensions between formal, non-formal, and informal learning environments and examines how educational systems can respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence and rapidly changing knowledge economies. Ultimately, the paper argues that the future of education depends not on preserving traditional institutions unchanged but on transforming them into dynamic learning ecosystems that support learners in navigating complexity, uncertainty, and continuous change. Reimagining education in this manner is essential for developing adaptable, innovative, and socially responsible citizens capable of thriving in an increasingly interconnected and AI-driven world.
