Pedagogical Approaches for the Future: Preparing Learners for AI and Changing Labour Markets

Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, and evolving labour market dynamics is fundamentally reshaping the purpose and practice of education in the 21st century. Traditional pedagogical models, largely rooted in content transmission and standardized assessment, are increasingly inadequate for preparing learners to navigate complex, uncertain, and technology-driven futures. This paper critically examines the need for transformative pedagogical approaches that align with the demands of AI-integrated societies and shifting workforce expectations.

Drawing on the complementary perspectives of Human Capital Theory and Constructivist Learning Theory, the study explores how education can be repositioned to balance economic imperatives with holistic human development. It argues for a transition toward learner-centred, future-ready pedagogies that emphasize critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, ethical reasoning, and lifelong learning. The integration of AI within education is analysed, not merely as a technological enhancement but as a catalyst for redefining teaching and learning processes, enabling personalized, adaptive, and experiential learning environments.

The paper further highlights key challenges, including digital inequities, teacher preparedness, policy–practice gaps, and ethical concerns surrounding AI use in education. Particular attention is given to the need for contextually responsive and culturally grounded pedagogies, especially within developing and small island contexts.

Ultimately, the paper contends that the future of education lies in a balanced synthesis of technological innovation and human-centred values. Reimagining pedagogy in this way is essential to developing learners who are not only workforce-ready but also adaptable, ethically grounded, and capable of thriving in rapidly changing and uncertain global environments.
