This article explores Philip Rieff’s critical analysis of modern society’s shift from traditional sacred orders to the dominance of therapeutic culture. Rieff argues that the erosion of communal sacred frameworks has led to the rise of individualism and self-fulfillment as primary social values, undermining collective authority and shared meaning. The paper examines how this transition impacts the cohesion and identity of communities, highlighting the consequences of therapeutic culture’s focus on personal well-being over social responsibility. By revisiting Rieff’s critique, the article provides insight into the challenges facing contemporary community life and the potential paths toward reconstituting social order.

This study critically examines the enduring relevance and practical application of Kenneth Kaunda's philosophy of Zambian Humanism within the contemporary political landscape of Zambia. Developed as a guiding ideology for post-independence nation-building, Humanism emphasized moral leadership, social justice, communal welfare, and self-reliance. Through an analysis of current governance practices, socio-economic trends, and public discourse, this research investigates the extent to which these foundational tenets continue to resonate or have been diluted amidst prevailing neoliberal economic reforms, persistent corruption, and widening socio-economic inequality. The findings reveal a complex interplay between the symbolic legacy of Humanism and its often-compromised practical implementation, highlighting a significant disconnect between ethical ideals and political realities. Despite these challenges, the study concludes that Kaunda's vision remains a significant touchstone for national identity and a source of inspiration, offering a framework for re-aligning contemporary governance with principles of equity and collective well-being.

The proliferation of digital streaming platforms has profoundly altered media consumption patterns, particularly among the collegiate population. This article aims to comprehensively explore television binge-watching within this demographic, focusing on its conceptualization, the underlying motivations (gratifications) that drive it, and the self-reported consequences. By synthesizing extant literature, this study provides an integrated perspective on this widespread behavior. Findings indicate that binge-watching is a complex activity fueled by desires for entertainment, emotional escape, and social engagement. Concurrently, it is associated with a range of perceived negative impacts on academic performance, sleep quality, and physical well-being. A nuanced understanding of these dimensions is crucial for educators, parents, and students to effectively navigate the evolving digital media landscape.
