Abstract

Traditional vernacular architecture stands as a vital repository of cultural heritage, reflecting historical development, societal structures, and environmental adaptation. This article investigates the profound influence of modernization on the architectural integrity of traditional Korean vernacular houses (Joseonjok houses) located within the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, China. By synthesizing insights from existing literature, the study explores how shifts in socio-economic conditions, the adoption of new materials and construction techniques, and evolving lifestyle preferences, all driven by modernization, have reshaped the physical form, spatial organization, and symbolic meaning of these dwellings. The analysis reveals a complex interplay between the pressures of modernization and the efforts to preserve cultural heritage, highlighting the critical need for balanced approaches that accommodate development while safeguarding unique architectural traditions.
